Wedding Photography Style

When you mention Oxfordshire, most people (even outside of the UK) will think of the oldest university in the English speaking world. Oxford University has quite simply been immortalised in popular culture. Whether on film, in books and plays and even on the big screen. What an iconic region to host a wedding in. The city if Oxford itself has been the setting for many beloved movies - from the infamous Harry Potter to the timeless class of Bond.

There’s just something about the English gothic arches and spires that really aid that cinematic experience, whether you’re creeping through the passages of Hogwarts from your sofa at home, or wandering the historic streets themselves. Oxford has to be one of my favourite cities in the UK for wedding photography, there's just so much to take in.

Around every corner of Oxford is an experience in itself - take a rowboat or a traditional punt down the Isis, the local name for the portion of the river Thames that runs through Oxfordshire, and most famously where the University holds its rowing regattas. If you’re a real bookworm, you’ll have no time to explore the rest of the county when you discover The Norrington Room in Blackwell’s Bookshop in Oxford city. In the largest single selling room of books in the world, you’ll feel like you’re stepping into a basement of literary history.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little different for your Oxfordshire wedding (borderline quirky), it’d be criminal not to recommend Oxford Castle - a reformed prison block turned modern hotel. Who doesn’t want to tick staying in a decorative cell block off their bucket list? With all of the rooms restored in their original wings, and the old staircases up to the cellblock corridors shined and paved with glass, it’s a truly unique backdrop for your Oxfordshire wedding photographer, a short sentence at this reasonably priced Oxfordshire hotel will be an unforgettable one for your wedding guests.

Beyond the spires of the city, there are some gorgeous nature hotspots to escape to, including a couple of local vineyards to note that is a real treat to visit in the nicer weather. Chiltern Valley wines, nestled into the slopes of the Chiltern Hills, is a popular venue for Oxfordshire weddings, with its charming 18th-century rustic barn and stunning picture-perfect orchard - ideal for a bright spring or hot summer wedding.

And of course, it would be barmy to get to this point in a conversation about Oxfordshire and weddings and not mention Blenheim Palace! A visual feast of baroque architecture, stunning stonework, and visionary gardens; a stately masterpiece built as a gift to the 1st Duke of Malborough upon leading allied forces into the battle of Blenheim in 1704. You can, in fact, marry at Blenheim, and you’re spoilt for charm and choice when it comes to choosing which room to hold your wedding ceremony. The Great Hall? A grand library? The intricately artistic saloon? A lake view? Whatever backdrop you opt for, you’ll feel like you’ve just jumped into the set of Downton Abbey. Not to mention, selfishly, I’ll have hit the wedding photographer scenery jackpot!

It’s a pleasure to be able to photograph the architectural detail and all the visual beauty on offer in a location like Blenheim, and to be truthful, all of Oxfordshire.

If you’re looking for countryside charm rather than palace grandeur for your wedding and subsequent photos, there are plenty of beautiful locations to choose from in Oxfordshire, a county of bountiful barns and stately homes. I’m confident there’s something in this diverse landscape to suit the incredible day you have pictured in your head. Having a vintage themed wedding? Why not photograph some portraits on an old steam train at Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway. Jump aboard your own charter train and toast your wedding in one of the old carriage tea rooms.

Though if you really want to tell a story of your wedding in Oxfordshire, have a celebratory drink and inspire your guests at The Eagle and Child pub in Oxford, the hangout of Tolkien and C.S Lewis.
