Somerset Wedding Photographer

I’m Allister Freeman, a professional Somerset wedding photographer with many years’ experience photographing weddings in a natural style across Somerset, the UK and Europe. My photography has led me to work with couples across a variety of cultures and faiths and in all kinds of interesting locations – from the traditional to the downright quirky and everything in between.

It’s not surprising that Tolkien took inspiration for Lord of the Rings from Somerset. Home to rolling hills, dark caves and gorges, orchards and vast marshland, the name ‘Somerset’ quite literally comes from ‘Summer Settlers’. If you’ve visited anywhere in the county, it requires little imagination to make the link, it really is a beautiful region to host your wedding in.

Far from being just fields of green, Somerset boasts some of the most beautiful, photogenic beaches in the West Country, ideal for a stunning coastal wedding. You don’t have to travel far on bank holiday weekends and hazy evenings to locate a stunning spot to find peace into the winter waves or take the dog for a sunny stretch. 

Most people will have heard of Weston Super Mare, with its amusements, festivals and fairs. But you may not know that just a little further along from the resort you’ll find the less brazen Uphill Beach, an expanse of sand that sits in front of a stunning nature reserve.

Few may have visited St. Audries Bay at the foot of the Quantock Hills - a hidden beauty and favourite haunt for Somerset wedding photographers looking to capture the stunning waterfalls that cascade down the cliff by the edge of the shore.

Somerset is a real mixing pot of the natural, the historical, the mythical and the eccentric, many of the more rural weddings I've photographed in the region tend to have this quality which really aids my storytelling reportage.  There isn’t enough time to just to talk about Glastonbury alone! The city most famously known for its 275,000 capacity festival is also home to the Avalon Marshes – one of the UK’s most characteristic landscapes. Millions of starlings circle the sky above the wetlands every year, a spectacle so popular it encouraged the RSPB to set up a starling hotline.

Then, of course, in the middle of it all, is Glastonbury Tor - the mystical hilltop island, visible for miles, and Somerset’s most iconic landmark. The Celts believed it was a gateway to the underworld, where later legend told it to be the resting place of King Arthur.

If you’re looking for quirky and unusual as a backdrop to your Somerset wedding photos, wander into the centre of Glastonbury. If you haven’t visited the high street, you should. It’s not the kind of grey where you’ll find a Maccy D’s and a Pret a Manger on every corner. Instead, you’ll find an authentic kaleidoscope daydream of rainbow coloured hippie shops, selling crystals, handmade jewellery, lotions and potions (even broomsticks!).

If you’re a fan of all things spooky, spiritual and magical, Glastonbury is your mecca.
