I’m Allister Freeman, a natural and professional Essex wedding photographer with many years’ experience of weddings in Essex, the UK and Europe.
My wedding photography has led me to work with couples from a variety of cultures and faiths and in all kinds of interesting locations – from the traditional to the downright quirky and everything in between.
I don’t get to photograph weddings in Essex enough. If you’re not born and bred, or you’ve never paid Essex a real visit, then you’re probably sitting there thinking… seriously?
Over the years, Essex has been subject to some damning stereotypes and judgements.
If you’re on the other side of that fence, and you’re visiting this page because you have spent some time in the broad and varying landscapes of the county and are considering it for your wedding, then you’ll know just as well as I do that Essex boasts some seriously beautiful locations and stunning views and is steeped in a history that goes far far beyond fake tans and TOWIE.
There really is something for everyone in Essex. Home to the second-largest coastline of any county in England, not to mention the world’s largest pier at Southend (fans of Jamie & Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast will recognise their restaurant at the end of it). Did you know that Colchester was the Roman capital of Britain? And the oldest recorded town? That Essex is one of the driest counties? And home to over 20, picture-perfect vineyards?

Far from its white stiletto image, Essex is a natural beauty to escape and ideal for rural (yet connected) weddings - close enough to the busy hustle and bustle of London that you’re not too far from the action, but you can get yourself so lost in the countryside that you feel a million miles away from frantic tube stations and Pret a plenty.
Just a short commute from the concrete jungle, you can find yourself getting married on a quaint little village green, getting lost ambling through ancient woodland, or taking in a deep breath of fresh salty air somewhere along the 350 miles of shoreline.
What’s crazy, is that I find when I’m the photographer for couples who were born and raised in Essex, they'll often opt for a London wedding or one of the other surrounding Home Counties. From the mile-long lake at Gosfield Hall to the deer-roamed grounds of Quendon Hall, don’t be fooled, Essex is the perfect location for a wedding and most certainly in the race when competing with the likes of Kent, Buckinghamshire or Sussex for top wedding locations within reach of London.
If you’re looking for a grand country house to be the centre point of your day and wedding photography, you don’t need to go far to find some truly stunning choices available to you. Not to mention, Dame Helen Mirren grew up in Essex… and if it’s good enough for a Dame, it’s good enough for anyone, right?
In every county in the UK that I travel to, I find there’s always an interesting tradition or culture to find out about and capture in my wedding photography. In Essex, the most quirky has got to be the Flitch Trials? The Dunmow Flitch Trials traces far back in village history, and reference can even be found in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. In the trials, newlywed couples compete for a jury to prove that in the whole year and day since their wedding, they never once wished themselves unwed. The chosen winning couple receive the prize of a slab of bacon.
